How to actually get a seat on the Kandy to Ella train

The Kandy–Ella line is the most photographed journey in South Asia and the one most likely to go wrong on the day.

What the classes actually are

Observation saloon (first class reserved) sits at the rear with big windows and forward-facing seats. Air-conditioned on some services, which means sealed windows — worse for photographs, better if you are travelling with someone who overheats.

Second class reserved is the one most experienced travellers actually want. Windows open, doors open, and you can stand in the doorway. This is where the photographs come from.

Second and third class unreserved means standing for seven hours if you board at a busy station. On a good day it is a great experience. On a bad day it is a corridor.

The 30-day rule

Reserved tickets go on sale 30 days before departure and the good ones are gone within hours, particularly December to March. There is no waitlist that works reliably for foreigners.

Booking routes, in order of reliability

1. In person at a station, 30 days out. Cheapest and most certain. Impractical if you are not in the country yet.
2. Through your tour operator or hotel, who will send someone to a station. This is what we do — it costs a small service fee and it works.
3. Online resellers. They function, but they mark up heavily and occasionally sell tickets they do not hold. Check the booking reference against the railway’s own system before you rely on it.

If you have left it late

Do not stand for seven hours. Split the journey: take the train for the Nanu Oya–Ella leg only, which is the scenic three hours everyone comes for, and drive the Kandy–Nanu Oya section. Unreserved seats on the shorter leg are far easier to get, and you arrive in Ella able to walk.

That split is how we run it by default, even for people who booked early — seven hours in one sitting is a long time on a hard seat.
